Fox Sports created some buzz over the weekend with the use of “Roundball Rock” during Saturday’s Fox College Basketball triple-header broadcast. “Roundball Rock” is best remembered by sports fans as being the iconic NBA on NBC theme song from the 1990s.
The reaction on Twitter to Fox using “Roundball Rock” seems to be mixed. While some were excited to hear the music used on a television broadcast once again, others thought it should be reserved for a NBA broadcast.
I side with the former, though that might be easy for me since I haven’t paid much attention to anything basketball since the last Bulls championship run 20 years ago.
That said, I do sympathize with those not in favor of it. As a football and baseball fan, I’m not in favor of how Fox uses their iconic NFL theme music for their MLB broadcasts – something they’ve been doing for nearly a decade now. Fox apparently does it because they feel the football music gives their baseball broadcasts more of a “big game feel.” While I do love their football theme music, I also really like their baseball music and think it’s a shame that it now is rarely used.
While Fox isn’t committing on whether “Roundball Rock” will be used permanently for their college basketball broadcasts, I wouldn’t be surprised if they continue to do it more throughout the season – much to the chagrin of those who oppose it.
